Spending a week in Santa Rosa was interesting. It reminded me how nice it is to not have a home phone used as a primary telecommunication tool. My family and I were anxiously awaiting a phone call for my second biopsy (lung) and while the phone rang off the hook, it was usually (almost always) [...]

I have a great respect for the disease and the people who suffer from it, and am in no way insensitive to the lives that it takes nor the trouble that it puts its surviving patients through. But I also think that it sucks and feel the need, every so often, to laugh in its [...]

This is a friendly reminder that phone trees suck. They are inefficient and ineffective and frustrating beyond all belief. And when they end in a voicemail box that never gets checked, its a double-whammy. We’ve spent the last few days waiting for a phone call to schedule a biopsy of my lung and anticipating the [...]

Thinking A(head)

I’m left with a small handful of regrets from when I was going through chemotherapy 10 years ago. Obviously, I wish now that I’d have opted for a port back then. I also wish that I didn’t listen to so much music during chemo – music that I’ve come to associate with sickness and discomfort. [...]
Post-Op Update

The good news? 4pm became 12pm became 10:40am. I shaved a good five hours off of my hospital visit for reasons beyond my knowledge. This means getting food earlier and getting home earlier which are both wins. Upon getting settled in for pre-op, I was surrounded by 3 charming nurses who, I think, have major crushes [...]
The Hospital Gods…

… have shone upon me. It seems as though the 3+ hours that I lost last night to insomnia are being partially returned to me. Though I would never subject myself to THE BONE COLLECTOR again, if it means that my 4pm appointment can slide up to 12pm, then sobeit. Plus I got to see [...]
The Last Supper

So I’m not supposed to eat anything between 5am tomorrow and the operation (I’m having a biopsy or a hernia repaired or a tumor removed – we’ll see). In preparation, I’m about to set out with my mother and grab some dinner. This will, likely, be the best hour or two of my week. I [...]
Some Good News

Dr. Cortez, who did my biopsy on Tuesday, gave me a call today and did me the favor of explaining why it is that we are redoing the biopsy at the hospital on Wednesday of next week. It seems that while the sample taken from my mass was, in fact, ample, it may have been [...]
Let’s Do It Again

While I favor this expression when being sung by The Staple Singers, I loathe it while being spoken to me by a receptionist from my surgeon’s office. It seems as though the sample that was taken, ever-so-painfully, from my massive mass was too small a sample to yield a conclusive diagnosis. So now, I’m in [...]
