I’m left with a small handful of regrets from when I was going through chemotherapy 10 years ago. Obviously, I wish now that I’d have opted for a port back then. I also wish that I didn’t listen to so much music during chemo – music that I’ve come to associate with sickness and discomfort. But perhaps, most importantly, I regret some of the choices I made when it came to headwear and hats. I was an impressionable, confused 18 year old who was influenced (probably too much) by what I saw and heard on TV and records. I got about 20 hats. Yankees hats, doo rags, beanies, all kinds of stuff. I was interested in quantity more than quality at that time, but as I mentally prepare for what I fear could be another bald spring, I’m older, wiser, better, faster, stronger.
I think I’ll be a tad more selective this time around and opt for some nicer hats to wear regularly, as opposed to having a different garment for every day of month. Here’s what I’m eyeing so far:
Estate LA & Nine Grand teamed up on this one. I’ve been wanting something in a maroon/white for some time and I like some of the design work that Nine Grand has been doing recently. The owner of Estate LA is a friend of a friend but with this being out of stock, I don’t really see it happening. So since that one is off the table…
I’m not all that familiar with Recon but I really like this hat. The colorway is cool and the logo itself is nice. Plus it reminds me of 20th Century Steel Band‘s “Heaven And Hell Is On Earth” which is a sometimes favorite of mine .
A few more:
TRUE (grey/teal). TRUE is the quintessential bay area streetwear brand who, since I was 16, has really set the bar on the west coast for boutique fashion. It was great to see them get into the New Era world pretty early and they’ve been doing a great job ever since.
If I can find any of these guys in a 7 3/8, you can expect to see these covering my bald spot in the coming months. If not, perhaps I’ll just tattoo my head or something.
I know that this is more a fashion post than a health-related post, but after thumbing through my own site I realized how much of a downer it can be. I just needed to blog about something else. And really, I regret my hat choices from a decade ago. So like it or not, its relevant. Plus, I’m kind of sad that I’ll be losing my hair again (perhaps). It’s been a big part of my identity for my whole life (plus I’ve got a killer beard these days).

I am digging the TRUE hat! I love that I feel like I just went shopping with you. Thanks for the journey. Have a nice weekend. Love ya!
I think many of us made some questionable head-wear choices back then (although I have been thinking about rockin the Kangols again). Ya live and learn with age.
That Estate one is fresh. With the crazy amounts of streetwear brands out there… there are bound to be fresh joints to be found… IF you should need them. Still thinkin positive.
You aren’t putting enough thought into this…
Wigs man!
Think of all the other accessories that can go with the right wig.
I’m sayin the options are limitless!!!!
Alita: you have fine taste. Thanks for the constant support. Love you!
E: Fingers are still crossed. I’m definately staying positive but want to at least have my hatwear in order before I start needing it, you know?
iD: You are so right. I need to rock the Soul Glo! with some ear-rings… Any other ideas, let me know.
